Planting Tips
Location:
'BIG'™ begonias will grow in any landscape setting from full sun to full shade. In the Southern United States, 'BIG'™ begonias will tolerate full sun; however, the leaf color will change because of the light intensity. Bronze leaf types will turn a deeper bronze color, while green leaf types will have a slight red-bronze margin around the leaf edges. Plant in an area with adequate drainage.
Garden Height:
Final garden height is dictated by environment and geography. On
average, 'BIG'™ begonias reach heights of 12-18” (30-45 cm). In
warmer climates (USDA Hardiness Zones 7-11) with higher moisture
levels, 'BIG'™ begonias may exceed 18" (45 cm) in height.
Garden Spread:
'BIG'™ begonias have an upright, arching habit. As the plant matures,
the average spread is 12-15" (30-40 cm).
Spacing:
Because of their vigorous habit and dense flower canopy, 'BIG'™
begonias should be spaced at a minimum of 12" (30 cm) on center.
This spacing is 3x greater than traditional spacing for wax
begonias!
Watering:
If planted in an area with good drainage, 'BIG'™ begonias will thrive.
Overhead, mist, or drip irrigation systems are best for application.
If possible, irrigate in the early morning to avoid leaf burn caused
by the sun.
Fertilization:
Fertilization is one of the most important factors in producing a lush
'BIG'™ begonia with a large numbers of flowers. An all purpose, slow
release fertilizer such as 14-14-14 should be applied once in the late
spring during bed preparation. After 'BIG'™ begonias have
been planted, fertilize once weekly with a liquid fertilizer with an
N-P-K ratio of 24-8-16. Remember, begonias are sensitive to high salt
levels in the soil, so do not over-apply fertilizers.
